Clinical work:

Department of Neurosurgery in Masaryk´s Hospital in Usti nad Labem deals with study the whole spectrum of neurosurgery except of stereotactic procedures. The main topics are neurotraumatology, neurooncology, neurovascular problems and spinal neurosurgery.

The first area of my interest was the issue of injury of peripheral nerves. The issue of peripheral nerve research program continues with research program of cranial nerves, there were developer experimental research project for the regeneration of the vagus nerve, along with George Washington University, Washington, USA.

Degenerative diseases of the cervical spine are the next discipline solved at the department resulting in several presentations at the international congresses and the first comprehensive publication in Czech Republic about microdiscectomy by Caspar technique.

In neurooncology is main program issue of brain gliomas. In 1998 was our department included in the prospective Euro-American studies about chemotherapy in glioblastoma multiforme. Since 2002 we perform awake operationse in patients with tumors localized in the speech center in the central region. Research on brain gliomas still continues in several projects.

The range of clinical work includes issues of liquordynamic, our department introduced a measure of resorptive capacity of CSF through the lumbar infusion test, experience has been published repeatedly.

After the development of the anatomy microdisectional laboratory of skull base we wrote up transtemporal approaches to skull base pathologies and published in a monography for the European course on this topic. After the theoretical and laboratory management of these approaches we applied them in clinical practice (fractures of pyramid with facial nerve injury, malignant tumors of the pyramid and the entire spectrum of benign tumors - vestibular and trigeminal schwannommas, meningiomas). The department has created a multidisciplinary team for the center of skull base surgery and facial nerve surgery.

Number of my surgeries:

5221

Research:

We are interested in laboratory research since 1991 in cooperation with the Anatomical institute of the 1st Charles University in Prague (R.Druga, M.D., Ass.prof.) and with Department of Physiology and Clinical Physiology (Prof. R. Rokyta, M.D.) and it was successfully solved by a grant IGA Ministry of Health of Czech Republic in 1994 - Regeneration of peripheral nerves after injury.

We develop microanatomical disectional laboratory for skull base surgery, in collaboration with the Anatomical institute of the 1st Charles University, Prague (Prof. Petrovicky, M.D.) since 1999. Research program of transtemporal microsurgical approaches was again supported by grant IGA Ministry of Health of Czech Republic. The laboratory has become a base for organizing international workshops with anatomic disectional certificate Skull Base Committee WFNS (World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies) - Education Center Class "A".
